Synopsis: Joey Kelly aka Popcorn Kelly and his friends Doc and Buster try to live up to their motto of “Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”. As 5th-grade boys, the Liberty comes when school lets out for the weekend and the Pursuit of Happiness comes from the adventures or misadventures, which they plan and carry out.
As they walk to school, the boys choose an abandoned building to explore over the weekend. They imagine all the wonderful things they might find, coins, pieces of broken jewelry, and old bottles, just to name a few. But there was one thing they never expected to find.
Their adventure turns into a nightmare when a raging storm appears. Will they be able to find a treasure and can they escape in time?
I'm going to try my best to keep this review spoiler-free, so more of you can read it. I was sent a copy of this book from the author via Word Slinger Publicity a few months ago.
I decided to pick this up on the 30th December as I only had one book left to read to complete my Goodreads challenge and knew I wouldn't be reading on the 31st as I was going to have a day of blogging. This was the shortest book on my shelves, so I decided to pick it up.
I didn't really know anything about it apart from that it was a Middle Grade (I think) book and that it was the first in a series, so I pretty much went into this with no expectations.
As I expected I read this in about an hour or less, but ended up quite liking it. It was so easy to read and was just a fun children's book, which I could read without having to think/concentrate on the storyline too much. The characters were alright and I quite liked how adventurous they were and the preparation that took place before they started their adventure.
I do just quickly want to mention that this book is probably not for younger children or if they are a bit squeamish as this book does feature a bit of a possibly creepy scene.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER: There's a few pages that mention a dead body that the children find and it may be a bit scary for some younger children, which is why I thought I'd mention it. SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER OVER.
Overall, I did quite enjoy this and found it to be quite a fun and adventurous children's book. I know that if I were younger I would definitely enjoy this more.
