Spoiler-Free Review : The Boy Next Door by Katie Van Ark
In this intensely romantic novel, Maddy falls in love with her skating partner - who is also the boy next door.
Maddy Spier has been in love with the boy next door forever. As his figure-skating partner she spends time in his arms every day. But she's also seen his arms around other girls - lots of other girls.
Gabe can't imagine skating with anyone but Maddy, and together they have a real chance at winning some serious gold medals. So he's determined to keep thinking of her like a sister. After all, he's never had a romantic relationship that lasted for more than two weeks.
But when their coach assigns a new romantic skating program, everything changes. Will this be the big break that Maddy's been hoping for or the big break-up that Gabe has always feared?
I won this in a giveaway a couple of months back through Goodreads (Thank you to Goodreads and the publisher/author for providing the book!) and had been saving it till winter to read. Well, this month I finally read it and it was mainly worth the wait. If you saw on twitter then I did originally say that I really loved it, but after having some time to think about it, maybe I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought. This will be explained down below.
The book features Maddy and Gabe, partners in ice skating. They couldn't imagine their career without each other in it. They've been skating together since day 1 and wouldn't have anyone else than each other. Did I also mention that they both sort of love each other? Well, they do.
However, Gabe is the sort of guy who prats around with a bunch of different girls, everyone says his longest relationship lasted two weeks. Maddy is not like that and with her dad, Gabe is scared incase he breaks her heart.
If they get together, their relationship could ruin their successful skating partnership.
This book is a YA contemporary surrounding ice skating, but it also features problems at home with the character Maddy. Though this is YA, I wouldn't recommend it to the youngest readers as it does feature a small amount of sex, which I wasn't expecting going into it.
This book also has dual POV'S from both Maddy and Gabe, which I personally really enjoyed as you got to see both of their opinions on certain events. It also helped move the pace of the book along and kept the book entertaining.
I didn't hate Maddy, but thinking about it maybe she could've been better. She was totally head-over-heels from the start and she was oblivious to Gabe treating her like a doormat. She also made a lot of frustrating decisions, which just made matters worse.
However, I did like her in most parts, she was just a bit too clueless in places.
Gabe is a complete jerk. Okay, maybe not a complete one, but he was still jerky. He treated Maddy quite badly at times. Also, he was such a drama queen, but sometimes this part made me laugh as it was quite ridiculous at times. However, he did have his cute moments, like in the woods with the fake marriage thing.
The relationship between the two was the thing that mainly frustrated me as it was just so annoying. They both liked each other, but they were both just oohing and aahing about getting together, when they didn't need to be. They both loved each other, so I don't get what the problem with that was. Also, arguments with these two were just so easily caused. They both need to calm down. They would argue over the stupidest things and it was just so aaahhhh! (Basically.) It was like they were competing in the Olympics for the most arguments in a day!
Don't get me wrong though, this book has quite a few amazing qualities to it. One of these is that it is so addictive. I found myself in my sleep thinking about this book and times when I couldn't read, I really wanted to. When I did read it though, it was like the book was glued to my hand, I just couldn't put it down!
Overall I did enjoy this book despite it's downsides and I think that I'm going to higher the rate again. haha. I would recommend this book despite my minor problems with it as I have heard that many people loved this book and in a way so did I.
